Common questions about JainGPT
What is JainGPT?
JainGPT is a free AI assistant for Jain literature. You ask a question about Jain philosophy, history or practice in plain language, and it answers from the digitised Jain eLibrary corpus, showing the texts the answer was drawn from so you can check it against the original.
Is JainGPT free to use?
Yes. JainGPT is a non-commercial project of Shree Gyanvardhak Charitable Trust and there is nothing to pay. Signing in with a Google account is required to ask a question; the guides and the community Q&A can be read without signing in.
Who created JainGPT?
JainGPT was developed by Shree Gyanvardhak Charitable Trust in Ahmedabad, India, building on the decade-long digitisation work of JaineLibrary.org, which supplies the texts it answers from.
Is JainGPT connected to Jain eLibrary?
Yes. JainGPT is built on the Jain eLibrary corpus at JaineLibrary.org and answers from those digitised books, manuscripts and commentaries rather than from a model's general training. Other websites use the name JainGPT; this one is the Jain eLibrary project, reachable at jaingpt.com.
Where do JainGPT's answers come from?
Every answer is retrieved from the digitised Jain texts in the JainGPT corpus, sourced from JaineLibrary.org and JainQQ.org, and is shown with references back to the books it came from.
Is JainGPT the same as ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant that answers from what it learned during training. JainGPT answers only Jain questions, and answers them by retrieving passages from a fixed corpus of Jain texts, so an answer can be traced back to the book it came from.
What languages does JainGPT answer in?
JainGPT replies in the language the question was asked in, including Hindi and Gujarati. A question typed in Roman letters, such as Paryushan kya hai, is answered in the matching native script.
What is Shree Gyanvardhak Charitable Trust?

Its work spans education, spirituality and humanitarian service, including healthcare, animal welfare and support for Jain monks. The trust operates JainGPT and the India operations of JaineLibrary.org, the free online library of Jain literature that JainGPT answers from. Its website is gyanvardhaktrust.org and donations to it are eligible for tax benefits under Section 80G.
Our Mission
Building upon the decade-long legacy of JaineLibrary.org, JainGPT democratizes access to sacred texts, rare manuscripts, and philosophical commentaries. Our AI-powered search and chat capabilities make complex spiritual concepts accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or expertise level.
From the Jain eLibrary to JainGPT
The work behind JainGPT began in 2006, and it did not begin with artificial intelligence. It began with a scanner. That year Saket Singhi built the first Jain eLibrary website under the guidance of Mr. Pravin Shah, then chairperson of the Jaina Education Committee at JAINA, the Federation of Jain Associations in North America. The aim was a simple one, and it has never changed: Jain knowledge should be free, and it should be within reach of anyone in the world who goes looking for it.
What followed was two decades of patient, unglamorous work. Across India, ancient Jain books were scanned volume by volume — sacred texts, philosophical commentaries and rare manuscripts — and uploaded to the Jain eLibrary, where anyone could read them without paying and without asking anyone's permission. Books that had survived centuries in a handful of fragile physical copies became readable from a screen on the other side of the world.
JainGPT is the next step in that same effort, not a departure from it. A digitised Jain book only helps a reader who already knows which book to open — and most people arrive with a question, not a citation. JainGPT reads the Jain eLibrary corpus and answers the question directly: in plain language, in the language it was asked, and with references back to the books the answer was drawn from. The mission is the one set in 2006. Only the way you reach the shelf has changed.
