Why is honey not Jain

In Jain philosophy, the principle of ahimsa (non-violence) is paramount, and substances that cause harm to living beings are prohibited. Honey is produced by bees, and its collection involves disturbing and harming these living creatures. Therefore, honey is classified as Ghātiyā, meaning it has the potential to cause harm and obstructs the soul's purity. Consuming honey violates the Jain ethical code as it involves indirect violence towards sentient beings. Additionally, honey is not considered a Jñānāvaraṇīya (knowledge-obscuring) substance but is still avoided due to its harmful origin. Hence, Jains abstain from honey to maintain strict adherence to non-violence and purity of conduct.
