Jainism is fundamentally atheistic in the sense that it denies the existence of a creator God who controls or intervenes in the universe. The Jain concept of God (Bhagavān) differs significantly from the theistic idea found in many other religions. Instead, Jains believe in the existence of countless individual souls (jivas) that are eternal and capable of achieving liberation (moksha) through right knowledge, right faith, and right conduct. The liberated souls, known as Siddhas, are perfected beings who have destroyed all karmic bonds and dwell in a state of infinite bliss and knowledge.

This distinct understanding has sometimes led others to label Jains as atheists, as noted in the Dasam Granth where Jains are described as puritan and celibate but without a theistic God concept (Jain Journal 1991). Jain theology emphasizes personal responsibility and ethical living rather than dependence on a divine creator or savior. The focus is on self-discipline, nonviolence, and the gradual shedding of karmic particles to achieve spiritual liberation.
